PBbottleChandelier

Everyone said this green thing would be a trend. Prius’ would come and go, people would soon forget about Mother Earth, and we would return to our old conspicuous consumer ways.  However, that doesn’t seem to be the case. In fact, you know something has caught on to being mainstream, when major design companies like Pottery Barn, have adopted green philosophies in many of their product lines. Case in point, their latest take on a formal chandelier. Made from re-purposed green-glass wine bottles and iron, this wine bottle chandelier perfectly illustrates how being green can not only be good for the environment, but look good too!

If my mom can do it, so can you!

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Recently my mom had been receiving complaints from my father about how her junk drawer was getting “out of hand.” Rather than replace him, I figured the easier option was for her to simply clean out the drawer. Like many clients, she was defensive at first. She gave me really good reasons for why the drawer got like this. She was brought up by parents who lived during the depression, the stuff is validation or her hard work, she might need it in the future, etc. etc.

Like any good organizer who knows the downward spiral of this type of thinking, I told her that all her reasons were valid, but unfortunately, they didn’t help her cause. At this point I knew it was time for an intervention. Since we don’t live in the same town, I thought the next best thing was to provide organizational counseling via phone and e-mail. After a couple conversations, and some pretty precise instructions, this is the result of her hard work… (I must say, I feel like a proud parent … or daughter in this case)

Note: I used the clear plastic boxes from my “spring mix salad” that I was saving in my cluttered tupperware drawer. So I killed two birds with one stone. I was able to use a container I already had (saving money on buying new) AND I was able to remove clutter elsewhere. I guess that’s three birds. At this rate I will have no problem de-cluttering the rest of my kitchen. YEAH! I have been soooo inspired by the new junk drawer, that I’m thinking of moving into the bathroom. Wish me luck!

Thanks for your advice, encouragement, love and support,

Mom

Domestic care has gone green!

Monday, August 24th, 2009

GreenGranolaFront

Whether you have a house manager who oversees your staff, a weekly housekeeper, or your children to do the grunt work, how we “run” our homes is very important. And since most of America isn’t lucky enough to have the first, that means all domestic care decisions are left up to you.

If you happen to be blessed with a housekeeper, you quickly understand the issues that come along with the help. The first being communication and the second being trust. In my profession, one thing that I find most difficult when helping clients “go green,” is communicating to their help what changes need to be made and why. Sometimes these conversations happen easily, aaaand then there are the ones that don’t.

Ahh, if only housekeepers came with eco-friendly awareness, that would make the process a whole lot easier. And if only an agency was in charge of that training, making sure every home care professional was just as knowledgeable as the next. Wouldn’t that be nice? Yes it would! And apparently someone else thought so too.

h|b would like to introduce you to it’s newest member of our referral family, Green & Granola Domestics. Not only does this amazing agency hire and train housekeepers for eco-conscious home owners, but they also provide childcare services in the same fashion. Training both nannies and babysitters to be knowledgeable of the “natural family lifestyle.” (such as attachment parenting, positive discipline, toxin awareness, recycling, water conservation methods, composting and green cleaning)

So the next time you think about hiring help for your eco-conscious home, save yourself a lot of hassle, and call Green & Granola Domestics!

The perfect vacuum!

Sunday, August 23rd, 2009

OreckTwo weeks ago there was a new addition to our family.  Along with house resident Lou, came Lulu. I swear that’s her name! And with double the fun, came double the fur. I was vacuuming every day, and with ol’ trusty losing suction, I knew it was time for an upgrade.

My search began with the Dyson Animal, a vacuum made specifically for pets. I wasn’t impressed. Besides its poor suction, it had too many gadgets that were confusing to use that just felt like a waste of plastic.  I refused to settle and continued the hunt. Next was the Garry, a vacuum I discovered on an infomercial late one night. I was won over by the side-by-side comparison with the Dyson, proving its superiority. However upon first use, I was sadly disappointed.

What happened to the old school vacuums that our moms had that would suck up a shoe if you weren’t careful? All I wanted was something simple and easy to use that picked up dog hair. Is that so much to ask? NO said the Oreck Platinum XL! *insert singing angels here* We’ve all heard of Oreck, they’ve been around forever. And though they may not look like futurist robots like some vacuums, adorned with unnecessary bells and whistles, they just work!

In addition to the HEPA-hypoallergenic filtration system that eliminates 99.9% of dust, dirt, pollen, mold and pet dander, and it’s IntellaShield technology that neutralizes the growth of bacteria, mold and mildew in the vacuum, it’s American made! And that means its more eco-friendly. How? Well, unlike fancy vacuums like Miele and Dyson, who are foreign born and have to be be shipped across seas to reach you or your local Bed Bath and Beyond, these guys are made in the good ol’ US of A, and therefore have a shorter distribution chain, and therefore a smaller carbon footprint.

Happy vacuuming!

Saving the world – 1 piece of paper at a time

Friday, August 21st, 2009

XeroxPaperTipsI receive a lot of coupons via e-mail. Not as spam, but by request. It’s part of my war on paper waste. And my foot soldiers (aka clients) have helped greatly in this cause. However, recently I came across a few “paperless clients” who had some pretty funny habits. I discovered that many of them were printing their e-mailed coupons! Which kind of defeats the purpose of the paperless coupon in the first place.

In fact, when you print out your own coupons, not only are you wasting paper, but your wasting your own resources on the supplies to print them. Kinda silly if you ask me. So I did a little investigating, and what I found was this… people had good intentions they just didn’t know they had options.

For example, most phones nowadays have multi-functioning capabilities. They are phones, texting devices, and now e-mail centers, capable of viewing, sending and receiving electronic mail. And from the latter technological innovation, is how I got the idea for my paper saving coupon trick.  Rather than print my Border’s coupon for 40% off one book (only to be discarded in the trash at the register) I show them my coupon containing e-mail on my phone. They simply punch in the code and voila! Instant discount … no paper wasted.

Go on, don’t be shy. Give it a try! =D

Planning for Labor Day weekend?

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

BagassePlatesAs the official last holiday of the summer nears, people are getting ready for the infamous BBQ weekend by stocking up on all the necessities. Besides food, the most commonly bought supplies are plastic cups, plates, and utensils. And even though these products can be recycled, they usually end up in the trash. After all, who wants to stand around collecting dirty plates to rinse and recycle?

So to have fun at your BBQ and be kind to Mother Earth, buy Bagasse plates! What’s that you say? They’re a readily renewable resource made from sugar cane stalk. They are as sturdy as the toughest paper plate on the market, are 100% biodegradable/compostable, microwave safe, and soak proof.

Not only are no trees harmed or oil refined in their production, but these guys are bleached with hydrogen peroxide, which means no harmful chlorine leaks into your water supply. Need we say more? I mean seriously, if they’re good enough for Martha, they’re good enough for me!

Move over bamboo, you’ve got some competition!

How does eco-friendly cereal taste?

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

sweet-wheatUmm, deeelicious!

Each year, there are roughly 2.5 BILLION cereal boxes sold in the United States. Statistically, that’s a lot of trees. And I don’t know about you, but I like my trees not in a box. So how do we avoid the tree massacre and save the world? You buy Three Sisters cereal.

These genius ladies figured out that you don’t need the ubiquitous cereal box to make your stuff look cool or taste good. In fact, their cereal stays fresher than most boxed brands because their bags have built in zip locks. No more looking for chip clips and hair ties!

Now some people might be a little confused about this products eco-friendliness factor. Thinking “aren’t they still using a plastic bag?” And to you I say yes, they are. But what they are NOT using, are trees. So since every box of cereal already comes with a plastic bag inside, this company is saying, less is more.

Three Sisters cereal is sold exclusively at Whole Foods. Enjooooy!

h|b <3’s Danny Seo

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

SeoAromaShowerI recently caught the flu of all flus. Not the N1H1, but it sure did feel like it was something serious. And though I did score the sexy man voice, I also got a horrible cough that still won’t go away. One thing that seemed to help were hot showers. And while taking one last night I remembered a genius tip from environmental lifestyle expert Danny Seo. He said to hang a bundle of eucalyptus leaves (sold at craft stores and flower shops) from your shower curtain rod or door. The heat and steam help to activate the herb’s essential oils, which can ease congestion. And believe it or not, but it worked! Can we say cheap sauna? Next I plan to get creative and use other herbs and flowers for fun … like french lavender. Mmm.

Tip: Hang your bundle with natural garden twine, which is more moisture-resistant than cotton twine.

The elephant in the room

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

GiftelephantHeather and I recently encountered an awesome client who if there was an award for “Best Mutli-Tasker,” would win hands down. She juggles home, husband, kids (school schedules & play dates), personal appointments, cats, a dog, even a fish! And like most women who have such busy lives, things can get a little hectic at times, especially with regards to ones memory. In fact, this particular client didn’t need help with organizing her stuff at all, rather, she needed help organizing her time.

What people don’t realize is that clutter comes in many forms; physical clutter and mental clutter. Often in our line of work, we meet people who have very clean orderly homes, but find that they struggle with disorganized thoughts, resulting in poor time management skills and extremely long to-do lists.

To combat this type of mental clutter, we come up with various custom easy-to-follow systems that break down large tasks into smaller more manageable ones. For example, instead of feeling overwhelmed with a master to-do list, we create sub-categories such as…  To Call  | To Go  |  To Buy  |  To Repair/Clean … all while prioritizing within each list. Other tools that aid us in tackling mental clutter are new products and services that help client’s regain control of their busy schedules and wandering thoughts. One such site, which I recommended to my multi-tasking client, was Gift Elephant.

Gift Elephant is a wonderful site that keeps track of all your friends, family, co-workers, and even children’s friends birthdays, as well as the gifts that are given and received. After all, there’s nothing more embarrassing than giving your son’s friend Oliver the same action figure two years in a row! =O

Nooo mooore wiiire haaangers!

pinkfuzzyhangers

At first sight, I was against the idea of these fuzzy hangers. I was used to my setup and was quite happy. But as my wardrobe grew, the hangers just took up way too much space in my itty-bitty closet. And as pretty as they looked, I knew they had to go.

It got so bad in fact, that I found myself holding onto and using the wire hangers from the cleaners. Not because I was too lazy to switch out the hangers, but simply because they took up less space than the ones I was using. Then one day in an intense Google search to find skinny hangers for a kid’s closet, I came across Only Slim Line Hangers. Not only do they have small skinny hangers for kids in all sorts of fun colors, but they have softer shades for adults as well.

Each slim line hanger is 1/4” thick, (standard plastic hangers are about 1/3”) non-slip, and come with adjustable components, so you can hang anything from sweaters to skirts, to even your dainty spaghetti strap dresses.

I heart these hangers!

PS. If your planning on transitioning to new hangers and don’t know what do to with your old set or the straglers that don’t match, both wire and plastic hangers can be recycled directly into your blue recycling bins. If you’d like to give them a second chance, your neighborhood cleaners will be more than happy to accept any wire hangers you have for repurposing.
