Less IS more for the holidays

Monday, November 30th, 2009

So I caught up on my Tivoed Oprah shows over the holiday weekend, (yes, I’m guilty) and I was touched by a particular segment on the happiest women around the world. Based on a social psychologist’s study of the happiest countries, Oprah wanted to find out what exactly made them so. Ranked number one was Denmark’s capital Copenhagen. There Oprah interviewed a woman named Nanna, who shared among many things, that people in Copenhagen are very environmentally conscious. A third of the population rides bikes around the city, many with grocery bags or small children in tow. And though impressive, that wasn’t the statement that struck a cord with me.

While on a tour of Nanna’s tiny home, she pointed out that most homes in Copenhagen were small with limited storage, but that “less space equals less stuff, and more life.” Wow, you definitely don’t hear people in the US say that. Maybe that’s because we come in 23rd on the happiness scale. Now that’s a sad fact. But think about it, we’re such a consumer driven country constantly buying and acquiring goods based on targeted advertisements, that we forget the things that truly make us happy, our friends and family.

With the holiday season now upon us, I find this segment to be extremely poignant, as I’m now reconsidering the gifts I’m going to be giving. Rather than buying silly toys that might clutter someones home, I’m thinking of finding ones that are either useful or something that can be shared with loved ones. Like tickets to fun activities or gift certificates to yummy restaurants. For after all, we really don’t reminisce on things like that really cool pinhead from Sharper Image circa 1987, but rather the time that Aunt Mickey took us to see Robocop when my brother and I were clearly underage and very easy to traumatize.

Pur~lisse is pure~magic!

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

purlisseWithin the last few months I’ve been receiving compliments on my “great looking skin.” Something that really threw me, as I never thought I did, or heard other people think it. So I began to wonder, what the hell am I doing right? Such a nice alternative to the usual question. … And then it dawned on me. It’s my new skin care products! *enter hallelujah music here*

I’ve always been on the lookout for the perfect skin care line. One that doesn’t contain parabens, petrochemicals, or synthetic fragrances, and definitely not tested on animals. I first tried Dr. Hauschka’s line, which aside from being pretty pricey, was great in terms of desired ingredients. However I didn’t like smelling like a botanical garden. I then sampled lesser no-name products that seemed to fit the bill, but the quality seemed to lack. So when I stumbled upon Pur~lisse, I knew I found something special.

Not only are their products free of parabens, petrochemicals, propylene-glycol, synthetic colors and fragrances, but they actually work! The cleanser despite being gentle, managed to remove ALL my eye make-up, the skin moisturizer is sooo soft and silky, and the petroleum-free lip moisturizer manages to keep my dry lips well… moist! Now instead of fluffing off my morning facial care regimine I look forward to it. Thank you Pur~lisse!

PS. Dear Santa,

I’ve been good this year. Can you please drop some pur~delicate, pur~moist, and pur~lip comfort down my chimney? Thank yooou.

I heart Moroccan Oil!

MoroccanOil

Normally I’m not one to push products on people. Maybe my favorite chocolate bar to my closest friends …Vosges Goji Bar (found at Whole Foods) but never products. I always feared I’d come across as some pushy Avon lady. But I’m sorry, I cannot hold back any longer. Ladies and hair care savvy gentlemen, I would like to introduce you to my newest friend, Moroccan Oil. Oooo. Aaaaah.

Before Moroccan Oil and I met, I was washing my hair every two or three days. Since most shampoos would strip my hair with harsh hard to pronounce chemicals – some of which have been proven to be carcinogenic, I tried to wash my hair as least as possible without looking (and smelling) like it. Now with Moroccan Oil however, I look forward to washing my hair. Not only is it sulfate, phosphate and paraben free, but it has the most amaaazing exotic scent.

I can’t stop smelling myself!

Be a human being, not a human doing

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Sometimes I do things because I really want to, and other times I do things because I know I should. An activity that I find teeters on the fence between these two distinctions is yoga. I always love the way I feel after. I even enjoy certain poses when doing them – more savasana please. However getting myself to a class is often an uphill battle. One thing that motivates me however, is my favorite teacher Thomas. What draws me to his class is not his style of yoga instruction, (which I love) not because the class is an hour long level 1, (which is just the right amount) but primarily because I really connect to the things he says. One such “Thomasism” that stuck with me one day was the simple suggestion that sometimes it’s necessary to give ourselves a break (whether it be from a yoga pose or life in general) and “be a human being, not a human doing.” Talk about an Oprah a-ha moment!

If we are always on the go, on the phone, replying to e-mails or sending texts, where does that leave time for ourselves? Putting too much on our plates is like that horrible feeling after Thanksgiving dinner; guilty! So why not the next time you find some free time, take it and enjoy it. Read a book, watch your favorite TV show, and if you really want to, start organizing – yes, some people find that relaxing.

PS. If you’re ever in the Westwood area, check out Thomas Taubman’s class at YogaWorks. He’s the best!
